Minimally Invasive Surgical Techniques
Newer minimally invasive surgical techniques for the treatment of glaucoma are generally considered both safe and moderately effective. They include:
iStent
A tiny titanium stent implanted through a corneal incision to aid in the drainage of aqueous fluid. The device is used to treat early to moderate glaucoma.
Trabectome
Used in the treatment of open-angle glaucoma, trabectome surgery decreases intraocular pressure by increasing eye fluid drainage. The trabectome’s angled tip penetrates the trabecular meshwork drainage system and uses electrosurgical pulses to ablate the tissue. It then provides irrigation and aspiration to clear away the ablated tissue.
